Rebels at the Door

Poet, painter, and musician
Who wear your insides out
Watching as others wonder
At your bruises on display
Asking, why in the world
You would expose yourself
Like that, in the open air?
They could never know
The choice was never yours –
For how can you control
A soul
Too strong to be stifled
A spirit
Too wild to be withheld
Within the confines
Of flesh, bone, and brain
Where only the heart remains?
