On Today’s Episode of The Cryptoverse…

The 3 stories being covered today:

Episode Transcript & Notes

IPFS Gateway From CloudFlare Points Covered:

  1. The hosting of web content is not really decentralised
  2. CloudFlare provide some decentralisation via caching but it’s still a centralised service
  3. IPFS is a DLT technology that is the perfect partner for blockchain dapps
  4. CloudFlare are launching their IPFS gateway so content they cache can propagate on the IPFS network
  5. Their motivation is to increase availability, but it also means once it’s on IPFS, if people are accessing it regularly, you can’t really get rid of it
  6. Also remember that Filecoin is in development to financially incentivise IPFS nodes
  7. ALSO remember that eosio storage is proposed in a dedicated whitepaper, which also uses IPFS to sync files among block producers, that’ll be huge

Next story…

Constantanople Will Soon Hit The Ethereum Testnet

  1. I spoke about this in my video on the 30th August called 29b hardfork if you want to go back and watch that
  2. Code finalised on 31st August
  3. Due to be pushed to Ropsten testnet mid October
  4. This is not backward compatible, so it’s a hard fork not a soft fork, everyone has to upgrade to avoid a split
  5. If all goes well it’ll be pushed to mainnet sometime in November
  6. The difficulty bomb is due to be pushed back by 12 months
  7. Mining rewards will be cut by a third from 3 ETH per block to 2
  8. Ethereum hashrate has fallen in the last month by around 20% https://bitinfocharts.com/comparison/ethereum-hashrate.html#6m
  9. Ethereum miners are being squeezed from 2 different angles, one is the falling price of Ether and the other is a 33% reduction in block rewards, which is almost like an additional 33% drop in the price for them

Meanwhile, Bitcoin hashrate has doubled during the bear market.

Here is the same 6 month view:

The 2 main differences between Ethereum and Bitcoin’s monetary policy are:

  1. Bitcoin’s issuance schedule is absolutely known. Ethereum messing with the issuance by reducing block reward from 3 to 2 is crazy IMO. It’s the kind of uncertainty that central banks create around changing interest rates
  2. Bitcoin’s supply has a known maximum of 21m coins, Ethereum does not.

Those two things are significant contributors to their respective prices. Invests move the mark and investors want certainty. Bitcoin gives us a level of certainty over monetary policy that we have never had before.

Tezos Mainnet Goes Live

After one of the highest grossing ICOs ever, and after going through a bit of controversy with their internal leaders falling out over the money, Tezos has finally moved out of beta and launched their testnet.

Tezos is no doubt now going go through the mainnet teething problems that all new networks have.

This article says their beta-net performed flawless but until you get it out into the wild there are many edge cases that you find that never occurred to you to test.

We seem to be at the point now where we’ve got our major blockchain app platforms up and running. So perhaps that phase is coming to a close.

Now, we can go up a level and focus on the apps themselves, which of the platforms they choose to launch on and how they each perform as a result.
