A Battlefield TV Show Is In Development

You know how ever since the first Battlefield came out in 2002, people have been dying to have a TV show adapted from its material? No? Yeah me neither, but that hasn’t stopped Anonymous Content, the producers between hit TV shows “Mr Robot” (still got to watch that) and “True Detective” (the first season anyway), and Paramount TV to buy the rights to make a television series based on EA and DICE’s hit video game series.

“Paramount TV actively seeks smart content from all sectors that will resonate with audiences and translate to compelling programming,” said Amy Powell, President, Paramount TV in a press release posted on DICE’s official website. “EA’s Battlefield has an incredibly dynamic narrative, coupled with a loyal fan base, which will allow us to bring this exciting and unique property to the small screen. We look forward to working with EA and Anonymous Content and thank Michael Sugar for his tenacity in bringing us this exciting project.”
“Battlefield has a tremendous built-in, engaged fan base, making it a highly coveted piece of IP primed for long-form adaptation,” said Michael Sugar, partner, Anonymous Content. “Together with EA and Paramount TV, we’ll develop the Battlefield TV series with the same commitment to robust storytelling that has made the game such a runaway success for nearly fifteen years.”
“Battlefield is one of the most loved properties among our players,” said Patrick Söderlund, Executive Vice President, EA. “We are thrilled that Anonymous Content and Paramount TV will look to introduce fans to Battlefield through a new medium.”

This is very strange news, to me at least, as the Battlefield games have never had a continuous story (except the Bad Company series), and since all the games take place in different eras such as World War One, World War Two, The Vietnam War, Modern Wars, and even the future, it is hard to predict when the show will take place. My money is on a World War One-based story, as it would pair up with the newest game in the series, Battlefield 1.

The show will be produced by Michael Sugar (producer of Oscar-winning movie, Spotlight) and Ashley Zalta (a new player in the TV show industry), and a with production company with a background of successful shows, along with a productions company such as Paramount TV, you know this show is in good hands and will have a big-budget. However, this leads to the question “Why Battlefield?” If it turns out to be a WW1 series, and since Battlefield doesn’t have an already existing story, did these companies buy the “Battlefield” name simply because they know that it will be big and surrounded by hype, and eventually will be a successful show, for the reason alone that it is connected to the Battlefield series simply by name. I don’t know obviously, but it is something to think about.

Anyhoo, I am very intrigued (no, not excited. Yet) in how this will go about, it seems like it will be successful (even if it isn’t good) because its Battlefield, and us gamers are easily taken advantage of (I mean have you seen Warcraft, personally I thought it was a brilliant film but that is because I am a huge Warcraft fan, and after seeing the film I instantly understood why people didn’t like it, it wasn’t that good of a film). The last war show I saw was “The Pacific”, and that was six years ago in 2010.
