Cubikolor Review

Since I’ve reviewed so many games during my time writing for this site, it’s typical to look at the title or simple screenshot of something and write it off as contrived or a rip-off. I expected this to be the case with the rather simple puzzler Cubikolor, but after playing, I’d like to give my thoughts on why I was happily wrong.

Gameplay:

The game quickly ramps up in difficulty, but this is great for puzzle diehards

Cubikolor is one of those games that while seeming rudimentary, ends up getting more complex than previously thought. This is further supplemented by a rewind feature, which feels much more appropriate in case puzzles are screwed up. (And they will) With additions like these, they only show the key to Cubikolor’s magic.

Story & Design:

While the game is never as epic as this concept pic, there is certainly fun to be had

Because Cubikolor’s puzzles are all based around landing on the proper tiles which associate with your block (It’s all in the name folks) engaging level design had to be essential in order for it to be successful in the first place. And for the most part, this is true. The mechanics fit well with how progressively hard the levels get, and it’s one of those games where going back to it later upon a second play-through will cause you to better develop a solution.

Presentation/ Visuals & Audio:

A small nitpick I had was that the lock blocks don’t look as presentable as the rest.

Upon finishing a level in Cubikolor, you’ll take witness to some nice graphics and statistics. At this point, this type of stuff in present in nearly every puzzle game on the planet, but it’s still nice to see it here. Besides for that, the game’s graphics are what you’d expect, and don’t change much throughout the course of the game.

Conclusion:

Cubikolor is an excellent and thorough puzzle game that keeps the player on their footsteps whenever they sense what will come next. Not only is it ever evolving, but it always retains engagement, something that is a true testament to the great work put into it.

Cubikolor gets a 8/10 (Very Good)
