Contrary to popular belief, great interactive mystery isn’t just accomplished in AAA’s, but indies as well. Horror games like Home and Lone Survivor have built their atmosphere off of these concepts, and less eerie titles such as Thomas Was Alone still managed to instill a sense of intrigue. Forma.8 plans to do this amongst a space-themed Metroidvania structure. It’s an interesting set of ideas, but does it produce greatness?
Forma.8’s gameplay can seem a bit slow compared to some of the upcoming/recently released Metroidvania’s out there, but this lets players adapt better to the game’s style, seen often in gameplay. Little tutorial is ever given to you, but it makes the tinier moments, such as a puzzle or two, so much better.
Story & Design:
I was worried how Forma.8 would use some of its structure against an exploration themed backdrop, but the game accomplishes it better than I would have thought. One of the reasons for this is how the controls are aligned, giving you the notions that you have to choose your battles wisely. I love it when games do this, and how it’s placed on top of everything else Forma.8 does is really genius.
Presentation/ Visuals & Audio:
Forma.8 is striking for all the right reasons when it comes to presentation, as you’ll find matched ambient tunes and beautiful simplicity flowing with the gameplay. It’s hard to find a point where Forma.8 shines the highest (all aspects are equally good) but an aspect like this is a good sell if you want to recommend anybody the title.
Forma.8 was a pleasant surprise, and makes me happy for how indie developers continue to experiment within genres that are viewed as confined. Everything in this game is done with a purpose, and when no mechanics are left to waste, you’re left with a wonderfully crafted game.
Forma.8 gets a 9/10 (Superb)
