Jazzpunk Review

2014 was a weak year for games. Titles were either delayed, broken, or disappointing. When occurrences like this arrive, there’s always a back-up plan in the case of indie releases. Jazzpunk was one of the standout examples back then, and now it’s crossed over to console. Has it kept it’s charm?


Jazzpunk’s objectives are typical game inventions injected with wicked humor. Set in the Cold War, the game tasks you with pursuing items, and talking to strangers. Yet, it’s never simple. Jazzpunk’s abstract humor flows right into it’s gameplay, which could be considered a turn-off, even though I appreciated it.

Story & Design:

Jazzpunk’s plot isn’t really key to serving astonishment, but it’s the games 50’s setting that really dives everything into the deep end. Simple jokes feel much more obtuse and out-of-place, contributing to the nature Jazzpunk sets to provide. And while each level is packed with jokes, it never really becomes too overbearing.

Presentation/ Visuals & Audio:

Jazzpunk doesn’t necessarily dress to impress, but could be seen as a peasant turning into a great jester if you had a knack for referencing the old days. Everything has this sort of blocky feel, but this and the game’s tight soundtrack actually flow quite well with the comedy and it’s pace. Replay value is existent, but the multiplayer mode can feel tacked on after quite some time.


I would only recommend Jazzpunk for those looking to dive into a strange, but quickly lovable experience. It’s level of playfulness only succeeds for a specific niche, but after being loaded with AAA games in busy months, I wouldn’t have it any other way. When it clicks, Jazzpunk is the gift that keeps on giving.
