Sparkle 2 Review (Xbox One)

Although I’d like to be, I’m not entirely opposed to clones of games. Sometimes it’s rather interesting to see a slightly new take on a repetitive genre, but it always depends on what that happens to be. If it’s a genre that isn’t as diverse, like a 2D shooter or platformer, I’m typically satisfied. When it’s something that’s dripping with simplicity, then it becomes rather tiresome. I was reminded of this the hard way while playing 10tonsltd’s latest, Sparkle 2. Sparkle 2 is particularly uninspired clone, in addition to being a somewhat boring game. With those traits set, it’s hard for it to escape genericity.


Ever played the browser game turned hit, Zuma? Sparkle 2 is like that, except more expensive and without character. It’s well made for it’s mechanics, but does little to separate itself for any discernible reason. It’s not a case of overwhelming similarity, but more of a case of that mixed with a sense of repetition and being unnecessary.


One of the few things Sparkle 2 could have done to diverge itself beyond it’s mechanics was it’s presentation. But Sparkle 2 is immediately ponderous among first look. There wasn’t a single attempt to add more color to the balls, background, or the cannon. For an already mundane game like this, the lack of artistry kills it further.


A common attribution of mechanically derived games before it, Sparkle 2 does manage to have a couple good spots hidden underneath it’s tedium. The difficulty curve is surprisingly well done, and isn’t unexpected and out of nowhere. The music is also a lot better than the art design, and while not spectacular, doesn’t loop and repeat as much as other conventions. Some players also might find Sparkle 2 to have flavors of addiction, but this is short-lived.


Sparkle 2 is yet another example of a game that didn’t need to exist. There’s very little effort present in most aspects, and the one’s that are communicated properly fall flat in front of it’s flaws. Yet, this isn’t the biggest problem at hand. It’s noticeable that Sparkle 2 didn’t just have a lack of innovation, but also a lack of inspiration. Without that, it has no personality and falls below any competitors looking to deal with it.
