Titanfall 2: How I learned to love chaos

“First we fight, then we drink.” My commander, Barker, shouts out as he takes a swig from his flask. He may be a drunk, but I’d follow that man into hell any day. I take a leap out of the dropship after checking my equipment, my boots only kissing the ground for a second. I take to the nearest wall, jump kit propelling me forward as I leap and grapple a ledge, propelling myself to warp speed. I take aim at the enemy and fire, a human missile laying waste to an opponent that was unaware.

Welcome to the world of Titanfall.


For a long time now, games have been changing. Deeper stories, better characters, beautiful scenery. They long to be accepted as something more than a passing fancy. Something deep that will stand the test of time.

Then, a game like Titanfall 2 comes out.

That’s not to say the game isn’t beautiful, or its story isn’t rich. It has its moments, and at the end of the campaign I was attached to BT-7274, my Titan pal.

But above all else, Titanfall 2 is a game.

It’s an experience, a rush that can’t be described in words. The controls are fluid, everything feels light and nimble, but it still has a sense of weight. When you embark in your Titan you can feel the change. They’re slow, but powerful. They power through grunts and other ground units, which is just a wonderful feeling.

Though, when matched with an equal force, the Titans suddenly feel less powerful. Titan vs Titan combat is slower, but no less intense. Since you have no shield, your moves need to be less rushed. It creates tense stand offs, waiting for backup while trying to get better angles than your opponent.

As you can tell, it’s a little busy.

But that’s the excellence of Titanfall. You drop in and it’s war. Pure chaos around you, and as the match continues it only ramps up. Titans start falling and all of a sudden you have to worry about those giants that could end you with a thought, but only if they can catch you.

It’s a game, designed to be fun to play. Even people who are less skilled can have fun laying waste to grunts in the Bounty Hunt or Attrition modes. Titanfall reaches out to everyone, and presents an experience that can not be understated.
