Hard work=/= success

The Chinese language is very sophisticated. From being one of the hardest language to learn and write, to creating two versions of characters, creating our own numbers, to having many dialects and accents, what I’m most in awe of is the proverbs and philosophies we have. The sayings, proverbs, and philosophers are plenty. It doesn’t matter how well or poorly educated you are, these teachings are commonly taught for all in between.

There’s a saying in Chinese that often that don’t get enough credit, and sometimes I wish there was an English version too. Because it would change the western mindset in my opinion. Despite my culture being stereotyped as high achievers, smart, and successful, there’s actually a saying that goes “you didn’t have enough luck”.

This saying doesn’t fault the individual for not doing well enough, or trying hard enough, or not being well prepared enough. It faults that luck wasn’t on their side, and that it wasn’t their fault. The saying in grounded in the believe that although the equation defaults to the individual, but it also accounts for luck to be accounted.

Hard work + luck = success

Hard work =/= success
