I finally got around to watching the new Thor: Ragnarok trailer and I must say it looks amazing.
Who doesn’t like Hulk and Thor sharing screen time for 2 hours while a sinister Cate Blanchett tries to destroy the world?
And if the trailer wasn’t enough, that title though…
Thor: Ragnarok
That just sounds epic, dun it?
So, in Norse mythology, Ragnarok (Doom of the Gods) is a series of doom and gloom events that lead to the end of the world or the end of the gods or something or the other.
Basically, the Vikings version of the Apocalypse.
Reading up on Ragnarok reminded me of a paper I wrote a few years back on the biblical Apocalypse. To make a long story short, the term “apocalypse” has nothing to do with the end of the world.
The word apocalypse comes from the Ancient Greek and it literally means to lay bare, making naked, a disclosure of the truth, an uncovering. Doesn’t sound so fire and brimstoney does it?
Whether or not there will be a final battle between good and evil and family turning on each other and solar flares and dragons coming down from the heavens to scorch the earth isn’t something I have the answer to. Nobody does.
But what I can say is that the term “apocalypse”, in its root meaning, is about truth being laid bare.
It’s about things that were once unknown becoming known.
It’s about the answers to life’s toughest questions finally being revealed.
It’s about becoming aware of the hidden truths inside of each of us.
You see, apocalypse isn’t a cataclysmic future event, but something we can experience daily in the quietude of our prayer time.
Or in a walk around the neighborhood.
Or in a pillow fight with your kids.
Or while watching Thor: Ragnarok as you stuff your face with buttery popcorn.
Apocalypse can be right now if you want it to be.
So, lets stop flipping out about the things we can’t control — this only closes us off to true apocalypse, to our own personal revelation moment where everything comes together and our deepest, truest Self makes a cameo.
So, say it with me now….
Give Me More Ragnarok!
