Your #1 Enemy

Beware of no man more than of yourself; we carry our worst enemies within us. — Charles Spurgeon
We have a natural proclivity to blame all of our screw ups and misfortunes and failures on external forces.
We put it on our spouses or our bosses or the system or the devil or our family. However, most of our problems don’t originate from the outside, but are fueled from the inside.
Yes, that’s right, your worst enemy is YOU.
Now, there are times where we aren’t the bad guy and pointing the finger outside of ourselves is justified.
But more often than not, we’re the ones we should be fending off.
Think about how many times a week you catch yourself listening to the usual narrative from your overly critical and pessimistic internal enemy.
I suck as a person.
I have zero confidence.
I’m wasting my time.
I’m almost 40 and have nothing to show for it.
I’m going to die with the “music” inside of me.
I’m never going to get out of this hellish rut.
Fortunately, God speaks.
He speaks a lot and he speaks often. He is as loud as we want him to be. It’s only a matter of reaching that space inside of all of us where the babble is muted.
I find that space in the solitude and silence of early mornings or late evenings or in random pockets during the day.
My prayer today is that you find that space.
That you make it a habit to go there whenever that shadowy enemy of yours starts running its dirty little mouth.
