Skill Session: So you think you know what designers do?
Science, art & design: “…we are not trying to make things pretty, we are trying to create a product combining these three elements.”
There are 3 myths about design:
1. Design is only about aesthetics. Reality: is a form and function.
2. Design is Art. Reality: the design is a design.
3. Design is a Tool. Reality: is a process that provides a solution based on a problem.
The process of designing is never linear, you follow common steps that you’ll have to go back and forth from. The design thinking process: define the problem, emphasize with the user, ideate and brainstorm a set of ideas, prototype: build tactile representations of these ideas, test: return to users feedback, implement: put vision into effect.
Sometimes you would need to go back. It is not a linear process. To Test again, until finding a solid idea and product, and again refer to the new feedback.
The three pillars of design are:
· Aesthetically: you don’t make a product look good according to your own judgment, it is about your target audience (grid, golden ratio, color theory).
· Teleologically: functionality and usability, driven and logical research; and
· Semiotic: content and relatable meaning, through cultural studies. You need to understand who you are designing for.
To summarise, Nora said, “…we designers translate the objectives of the customer into a visual, tangible product.”
