Porsche GT2RS: Could we have a new lap record holder?
The 19th and 20th of September marked important dates as Porsche took control of the coveted “Green Hell”, the Nurburgring in Germany. Typically when a manufacturer closes the track for a day it means something special is going on; the fact that Porsche had the track for 2 days meant that they were going to attempt something very big and very special. Special is a bit of an understatement though as Porsche was intending to set a new fastest lap record for production vehicles around ‘the ring’.
This would mean that Porsche would have to beat the Lamborghini Huracan Performante’s absolutely mind-boggling time of 6:52:01. Porsche, having a long racing history at the track and having set numerous lap records there before, could not stand to be beat by the Italian manufacturer. Previously, Porsche set a production car lap record with the 918 setting a time of 6:57:00, so when Lamborghini came in and beat their time by 5 seconds you can imagine their disappointment.
The Tuesday was used to set up the cars and get the drivers accustomed to how they (Porsche had GT2RS’s at the ring) felt on the track. Porsche came prepared to do whatever it took to show the Italians that you don’t mess with the Germans. They prepared for the days as if they were participating in a race. After a few warm-up laps on the Wednesday it was time to go balls to the wall and stick it to Lamborghini. After 6:48:75 (according to Autoevolution.com, a website with connections to Porsche) the yellow GT2RS was back where it started, destroying the Huracan Performante’s time by almost 4 seconds.
Although we don’t currently have official numbers from Porsche, this time is most likely quite accurate. A YouTuber by the name of Misha Charoudin was at the first corner after the start line (T13) and used a stop-watch on his phone to time the car. Although not 100% accurate he managed to clock the car at a time of 6:49:18. So, it can be said that the official lap time of the Porsche GT2RS is somewhere between 6:48:00 and 6:51:00.
Although Porsche were at the Nurburgring primarily to set a new lap record they were also testing 2 other cars. Along with the 2 GT2RS’s, one grey and one yellow, they had what is supposedly the 911 (992) Carrera and MK 2 GT3RS. Not much has been heard about these 2 cars but the GT3RS is rumored to have a 4.2L engine, which would be a nice increase from the current 4.0L engines. There are some very exciting things coming from Porsche in the not-to-distant future. But for now Porsche has (supposedly) reclaimed the title of having the fastest production car around the Nordschleife circuit at the Nurburgring.
