FIA F2 Hungary Race (Hungaroring)

Formula 2 is the new kid on the block…somewhat. This year, the former open wheel series named GP2 has been renamed to Formula 2. This is the FIA trying to make a more obvious path to the big leagues. You can find examples of feeder series in many other sports. For years there have been many different routes to Formula 1, so having a more planned route can help young drivers and families make decisions.

The fact that Formula 1 is seeing younger and younger drivers gives this series an advantage. Fans will be looking for the next big thing before they are the next big thing. Formula 2 will help fans see developing drivers move up the ranks until they have an opportunity in Formula 1. The racing itself is also tremendously exciting, every car is exactly the same. This way, drivers who are good are noticed, but drivers that are great move up.

The series is less demanding than Formula 1 when it comes to fitness, number of races, and financials. It is a great way for drivers to really immerse themselves in the life of a Formula 1 driver. It prepares them for long race weekends and more importantly the press. Getting easy access to young stars can help build a foundation for future Formula 1 fans.

Another added bonus for teams is that drivers will be familiar with tracks that are used on the F1 calendar. This is extremely important and will reduce the learning curve when tossed into the chaos of Formula 1. Currently, a lot of the races are available on YouTube which also provides fans an easy way to watch the series.

Despite Formula 2 adding more structure to the system, there are still so many steps drivers must take before this series. Hopefully the FIA will continue on their journey of making a road map for future drivers. When it comes to fans, this is a great way to really get into open wheel racing.
