I just finished reading this wonderful winter story, and honestly, I was so pleasantly surprised. I often struggle to get into novels, but this one was easy to read, gripping, and I got through it quite quickly.

The characters are extremely believable with relatable problems and challenges. You warm to them and want it to end well.

There’s a hint of romance that is doomed from the start because of lies and deceit. The setting, a homeless shelter, is perfect for the season. I thought I’d prioritise reading it over Christmas, but I enjoyed it so much, I finished a few weeks early!

The story follow a young woman, Sam Tipping, who sells her flat to fund a shelter for the homeless. Her parents disapprove — we’ve probably all been there! The parents are a nightmare throughout!

She has a passion to help people in need and the story takes you into the lives of the rough sleepers she helps, and the staff.

A journalist looking for a story volunteers at the shelter and is really judgemental, making unpleasant assumptions about Sam. They rub each other up the wrong way and it’s not a good start to their relationship. He’s working undercover, to dig some dirt on Sam’s brother, but is a likeable character, despite his deception.
