One Of My Biggest Regrets Has to Do with July 4th

It has to do with a musical celebration and our Capitol

I don’t have a lot of life regrets and all but one of them are small. But even a few of the small ones are persistent from year to year as the calendar reminds me of them.

Such is the case for the July 4th holiday.

My husband and I lived in Delaware and Maryland for three years, from 1989 to 1992. Most of that time was spent in a Maryland suburb, north of Baltimore.

Each year, during that time, we considered going to the Capitol 4th concert in Washington D.C. Each July, we came up with an excuse not to go. Where would we park? Would we find a place close enough? It was going to be crowded and neither one of us liked crowds.

So we never went. Now, 34 years later, I still regret that we didn’t go. We lived so close. Parking? So what, we’d find a place. Traffic? Both of us were used to driving the 1–95 corridor in heavy traffic.

Why does missing this concert bother me?

Growing up, I was a band nerd. I played flute and piccolo in our Symphonic Band and Marching Band, respectively. I marched in parades playing the Stars and Stripes Forever and more Sousa compositions.
