The days of a long and leisurely read of the news are over for me. Too depressing. These days, even scanning the headlines can cast a pall on my day. This morning, seeking something more inspirational, I came across a piece in the UK Guardian about how to ‘harness the ancient wisdom’ of a 4th century BC Daoist philosopher Zhuangzi.

It was that, or discovering how Gillian Anderson became a new sex goddess for women.

I decided harnessing ancient wisdom would be more beneficial.

The text, known as The Zhuangzi recognises that circumstances are always changing. Change is part of life, accept that nothing lasts forever and move on. We shouldn’t be afraid to move out of our comfort zone, to seek opportunities for new experiences, new challenges. Be bold and adventurous, it advises, find out what life has to offer.

So far, so good. I’ve advocated for this myself. I moved from the US to France, alone, and approaching seventy, mostly for that reason. And I’ve never regretted the decision. My life would have been very different — not bad, or unhappy, just different — if I’d stayed in Port Angeles, Washington.

At 68, I started a new chapter in my life: I moved to France. Alone. It turned out to be quite the page-turner. Still is — even when age insists on a part.
