Roadtrips have become a multi-time per year adventure for Randy and I. We haven’t traveled that far- four hours at most. However, there is bliss in just getting away for a weekend and experiencing something different. In fact, we stay home and live relatively simple lives most of the year so we can get away a few times a year.

Baltimore and Germantown, Maryland

Our first roadtrip was for me to meet his family in July of 2020. We went down for the weekend- from Pittsburgh to Germantown, Maryland. His mom put us up in a nice hotel as his brother’s family were in the process of moving. It was a relaxing weekend- good food, seeing his nephews play sports, and learning about some of the spots he loved while growing up.

We travel there a few times a year. We’ve been to concerts at Soundstage, one of my favorite venues. He loves going to see the Pirates take on the Orioles and Camden Yards is amazing. From there, we’re also close to Gettysburg and Washington D.C.

For Thanksgiving last year, we went and stayed with his brother’s family. We took a day to drive around Washington D.C.

My Second Hometown-Erie

My favorite short road trip location is Erie, PA. My grandfather was born and raised there. So, it makes me feel more connected to him.

I also love being in nature on the various inlets on the peninsula. I enjoy dock dwelling while reading. Crafting by the lake in a park. It’s my happy place, where I’m always calm and relaxed.

This is where I went on my last single road trip, three weeks before getting married- just a few of the ladies in my life.

Randy and my first solitary road trip here was for our first anniversary. Every year, we go somewhere for the weekend after or during Halloween. This trip was extremely low-key. We arrived by nightfall, went to the Barnes and Noble and then just hung out in the hotel room listening to the rain fall. We drove the peninsula before going home to hand out candy.

In June, we spent a weekend on the lake. We did a small amount of book shopping and stopped for a successful casino trip- his favorite activity. We spent time on the peninsula eating Sara’s icecream- their vanilla and orange twist is to die for! We also went to breakfast in Cleveland Ohio at the Haunted House, where I met Freddy Krueger.

Ohio Weekend

This was very much a his and hers weekend.

We went to Cincinati to see the Reds against Randy’s Pirates. There was a double header. It was freezing cold that weekend in the stadium! So, I sat through the first game and had Randy take me back to the hotel so I could read in comfort.

The next day, we went to Columbus to see one of my favorite rock bands, Clutch. I hadn’t seen Clutch advertised in Pittsburgh and hadn’t seen them for two years, so I wanted to make the trip. Joke’s on me as they were in Pittsburgh a few months later, in October!

Gettysburg

We headed four hours out to Gettysburg last year for Halloween weekend, which doubled as our second anniversary. We went to hear the ghost stories- did a walking tour. He did well managing my manual wheelchair though some tough terrain! We also did an audio tour of the battlefield.

In downtown Gettysburg, there’s a wonderful eatery where we did some outside dining. The fries and shake were amazing! I just wish I remember what the name of the place was!

Where Are We Going Next?

Our third anniversary is just over two months away! We’re not sure where we want to be. Off the top of my head, I’m thinking Philadelphia or New York. He’s thinking about Chicago or Detroit.

I’m excited to talk it out with him, plan and experience something just a little out of the ordinary!

This post is in response to Adrienne Beaumont’s prompt in The Challenged Publication. I’m a few days late to the party and this is a little long. However, I’m grateful that she made me dig deep and think of good memories.
