This is not a Drabble but a story about writing Drabbles, a how-to manual for developing a winning Drabble.

The Red team was the heavy favorite and reigning World Champions. Major General Robert “Old Man” Heathcliff, the Force Commander for the Red team, was a veteran of many Dabble Wars and after 30 years of faithful service and too many victories to count, this was his last engagement before retiring. He was the emotional favorite to win the war.

The Green team was not without its strengths and many of the betters on the sidelines gave them a real chance to upset the reigning champions. Their Force Commander was a resourceful leader. Intelligent, bold but cautious when he needed to be, Lieutenant General Jack “Sly Man” Williams was the master of strategy. He always seemed to have his resources placed right where they were needed five minutes before they were needed.

The war began at 0800 when the word came down from above, “redound.” The Green team got a quick start. While the Red team was scratching their heads about the meaning of the Word, General Williams already had one of his staff googling the meaning. “Contribute greatly”.

“That’s not what I thought it meant,” said the young 2nd Lieutenant.
