Today’s Tip from the Poet’s Path: Take time out to re-chart your course when life becomes a tempest.

I struggled to pour my spirit and time into the second draft of my poetry book, The Grape Picker’s Daughter, as weeks fourteen and fifteen slipped away.

During this time, my life hit me with some big life changes. Yearning for a break from the turmoil, I sought quiet moments of solace. I even took long walks to navigate the storm, seeking balance through much thought, writing poetry, and prayer.

The past few weeks have showered me with a storm of changes in my life.

In May, I avoided a car collision and had to say goodbye to my old SUV. Soon after that, I spent weeks in the valley heat of California on an expedition for a new used car to fit my budget. I had to deal with an array of used cars and used car dealers who were, mostly, less than stellar. The prices of used cars and interest rates dumbfounded me. After much research, I found a used SUV that fit my family’s needs, safety parameters, and budget.

Filled with optimism, I hoped for better times ahead, but unexpectedly, my perspective took a turn for the worse. I received the news that my poetry mentor and a very dear friend had…
