Tip from the Poet’s Path: When life becomes overwhelming, even writers may need to step back and take a breather before moving ahead.

As the third quarter tips in favor of the second half, I persevere with my BYOB Challenge for my book The Grape Picker’s Daughter: A Book of Poetry.

Life’s daily constant interruptions have once again dealt a setback to my writing schedule, leaving me trailing behind in a haze of elusive goals.

This August marks the first anniversary of the passing of one of my younger sisters, CoCo. For the past three weeks, I’ve felt somewhat overwhelmed and unable to focus my creative energy on my writing.

Over the years, I have learned that the best thing to do in these moments is just stand still and let life speak to me. I had to step away from my writing and take an emotional breather. Employing the time to find my balance anew was worth every minute of the past few weeks. I know Coco would want me to stop fussing about her and follow my dreams.

Despite this setback, I remained determined to achieve my writing goals and publish this book sometime next quarter.
