Last week I had coffee with a relatively-new friend, after which we browsed the trendy, super-expensive shops I deliberately avoid.

In one store she tried on some shirts, while I browsed with little interest or intent.

Anyone who reads me knows that I buy very little new stuff. My minimalist style suits my personality.

The two ladies in the shop, hovered, hoping, which made my browse just a little uncomfortable.

Now I do have a fetish for really lovely cushions, so that’s where I started. It didn’t take long for my interest to vanish.

The first cushion, not even to my liking, was $395. Seems it was made with some expensive fabric.

The others varied in price but most were over $200.

In one of my favourite charity shops, I can buy a cushion (stylish and in pristine condition) from $3 to $10. Also, feel that by buying there, I’m supporting the charity and not contributing to landfill.

One quick wash and it would be as good as new!

I moved on to the crockery section. It was interesting, everything displayed beautifully, but, a very stylish cup and saucer I could purchase for $72. A set of them ($432) would be enough to make my eyes water.
