I read a story by Michael Rhodes recently about how Mongolian BBQ (which I, too, love) isn’t actually Mongolian food. It originated in Taiwan.

That’s also true of other popular foods

1

French Fries: Despite their name, French fries are believed to have originated in Belgium, not France.

2

Hawaiian Pizza: With ham and pineapple topping, this pizza (one of my favs) was invented in Canada.

3

German Chocolate Cake: Also one of my favorite flavors, isn’t from Germany at all. It’s named after Sam German, an American chocolate maker.

4

Spanish Rice: Spanish rice is a term used in American cuisine to refer to a type of seasoned rice cooked with tomatoes and spices. It is not a traditional Spanish dish.

5

Indian Pale Ale (IPA): A hoppy beer that originated in England not India.

Interesting, eh?
