A Wee Bit of Wind

“A tree just fell down! Two trees!”

The whole household followed the excited shout onto the verandah.

I first checked the tiny ylang-ylang trees screening our septic tank. They have very shallow roots (why they’re ideal for planting over septic tanks) and are relatively new plantings.

Nope. They were fine. But beyond them…

Two towering giants on the fence line fell down. Oddly, they were both healthy looking, with plenty of green leaves. Not the dead tree that’s all bare branches.

It’s been windy for the past two days, tossing the trees and bushes all around. Today it had returned to gentle trade winds, at the level of a light breeze.

It wasn’t the strength of wind gust. It was the culmination of all the gusts that had gone previously, along with heavy rains softening the earth.
