Koi under newly formed ice.

Ice freezes, melts. It flows, and then again,
it freezes solid somewhere on its way.
Locked up and frozen tight’s the way it’s been.
Released, the Winter creeps along today.

With nights as long and dark as they will get
the days grow longer now from here on in.
It doesn’t feel like much has changed quite yet,
though very soon, the deep cold will begin.

A koi looks up from ’neath the creeping ice.
Fish flicks a fin and sometimes swooshes tail.
The days and nights pass by. Does it feel nice?
It’s just the way it is. We reach and flail.

Reach moving water; then we’ll catch our breath.
Let’s see what life brings after Autumn’s death.

Eight koi under the thin ice.
