“The Diderot Effect highlights how obtaining a single new possession can trigger a desire for complementary stuff, creating a seemingly endless consumption cycle.” (Chris Meyer)

The French philosopher Denis Diderot had some extra cash, bought an expensive scarlet robe, and threw away his old gown.

Soon, he discovered a mismatch between his other existing possessions and the new, luxurious robe. He bought more things to match the opulence of his new gown and ran out of money.

Human vanity is a fertile ground for psychological traps. Our changing lifestyles alter our wants and desires.

New wealth and social comparison blind us to what we truly want.

One acquisition leads to another, creating a cycle of manufactured desires driving overconsumption.

It takes a great deal of self-awareness, self-restraint, and mindful buying to avoid the trap of overconsumption.

Responsible consumption is a superpower.
