Bubbles nudged Rotund Rita, “That man is staring at you.”

Beans saved by Katie Michaelson.

Rita dug in her bag and pulled out a wad of tissue, “John, here are the scarlet runner beans you wanted. The hummingbirds will love you.”

John eyed the waitress bringing piles of waffles, “Boy am I glad we decided to eat here — look at those …”

“Rita, he’s staring at you!” Bubbles burst out again.

“Who’s staring at me?” asked Winifred.

Rita glanced across the room. Her heart raced. She felt that old tingle as she gazed into his eyes. Who is that younger woman he is with?

His shirt was wrinkled — as always — she smiled remembering how excited he was when he saw her painting — Blue Mood.

Did he recognize her?

“That’s no way to save seeds, Rita,” Bubbles startled her back to her gardening friends. “They won’t sprout.”

“They’ll be fine,” said Rita as she searched the room.

He was gone.
