Bubbles rearranged the frog miniatures on Rotund Rita’s garden table, “You should get rid of this junk.”

Flowers by the back door. Katie Michaelson.

“That so?” replied Rita as she placed plastic ties and baggies on the table for the gardener’s group to package herbs for the farmer’s market.

“You weren’t home yesterday,” Bubbles continued.

“Oh, wasn’t I?”

“I stopped by in the morning: Your car was here but you weren’t. I had to go pee so I rushed home. I came back later and your car was gone.”

“Was it? Bubbles could you bring my ribbon basket out? These herb bundles would be attractive with ribbons and bows.”

“Where was John yesterday?” asked Bubbles as she placed a basket overflowing with brightly colored ribbons on the table.

“I’ve no idea.”

“Was he here?”

Rita moved her frog miniatures back to their original location. “Was who here?”

“Was John here yesterday?”

“I don’t know, Bubbles. I wasn’t here.”
