Don’t You Love It When the Local Council Cracks a Joke?

--

A street sign in Henley in South Oxfordshire, England. It’s on a green rectangular background. It says “Free Pimm’s? Now we have your attention. Remember to put your rubbish in a bin or take it home for recycling.” There is a motif of a red Pimm’s can which says “Love Henley. Please don’t leave any litter behind.”
A sign that slapped a smile onto my face (credit: Monica Ray)

Last summer, I was walking in the beautiful city of Henley-on-Thames in South Oxfordshire, England. This is as picture-perfect as England can get. The Thames winds calmly through town and window boxes are full of vibrant flowers.

If you get there early and on a weekday, you’ll get lucky with the parking and be able to enjoy a pint with fish and chips in one of the riverside pubs along the river. You’ll see a family of ducks wade by when you’re sipping your beer and are thankful for your life.

So anyway, I was walking along and then looked up at the sign in the photo.

“Free Pimms?”

The quintessential British summer drink. A concoction of sugar, orangey spices and gin — of course I wanted it.

And then I read the rest of the sign and smiled. Those clever clogs at the council. Good for them!
