Have you ever found a hummingbird nest?

I’ve never found one in nature — only in pictures.

Hummingbird nests are perfect little homes, almost as if they’ve been constructed by fairies — intricately woven with twigs, lichen, bits of feathers, and soft fluff. I learned today that sometimes the little birds will even use spiderwebs to knit their nests together.

In their nests, they will lay up to two tiny white eggs, each the size of a jellybean or a small paperclip.

There are 16 species of hummingbirds, and five (5) of them have been spotted in our area. We’ve seen a ruby-throated hummingbird on the pink hibiscus in front of our kitchen window! Although most species live in Central and South America.

Our kid is doing a book report on hummingbirds. Can you tell?
