Help your child adjust to a new sleep routine with a great book.

School starts this week in my Alabama county (and, yes, football fans, the Crimson Tide has begun its fall practice camp). In my region, it can be tough to get children to go to sleep while it’s hot and light outside.

One of the best picture books I’ve read on that count is So Sleepy Story by Caldecott medalist Uri Shulevitz. Tapping into the reality that yawns are contagious, Shulevitz uses images of a house with a yawning face to help lull young readers to sleep.

After a librarian recommended So Sleepy Story, I was yawning before I’d reached the checkout desk. Here’s more on that and other books that ease back-to-school transitions:
