How Do You Write Letters To Children?

I am going to use my favorite pen to write my foster daughter’s child. She asked if I would be her pen pal.

“How are you?”

What a lame question.

I have done my share of stupid questions when talking to youth. Every time one pops out of my mouth I follow with, “That was a stupid thing to say. I bet you get that one all the time.” And the youth starts laughing and talking about all the awkward things adults ask them.

Writing letters is even harder. I want to engage with them so they feel special.

My main purpose when writing youth far away is to let them know they have my attention and I am interested in them. If I do those two things they open up and flood me with stories about what they are doing.

Just like in person.

The above card will bring a smile.

What do you think the answer to, “Grandma, are you a pen?” will be?
