“We came all this way to explore the Moon, and the most important thing is that we discovered the Earth.”( Bill Anders, astronaut, Apollo 8 )

Serendipity, the accidental discovery of desirable things, happens even in space.

NASA launched its first manned mission to the moon on December 21, 1968. The astronauts, Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders, orbited the moon 10 times and took 862 photos.

The most important photo was not of the moon; it captured the earth as it appeared over the moon’s horizon.

Bill Anders, who took the photo, said,

“How finite the Earth looks… there’s no frame around it. It’s hanging there, the only colour in the black vastness of space, like a dust mote in infinity.”

It took a lunar mission to rediscover Earth.
