My sophomore has been bemoaning the fact that high school has become the new college.

“Join these clubs. They look great on your college application!” say parents.

Where’s the fun in that?

“I wish we did creative writing, Mom. Now it’s just about reading some text and analyzing the main idea”, she says.

I get it. I’m with her. I tell her it’ll be better in actual college (hopefully!).

So we’ve started a new family tradition where we come up with haikus every morning over breakfast. It’s creative, quick, and fun.

We forgot to write them today. So I texted my kid at her bus stop and promised to do them over dinner tonight.

This is what she wrote back immediately:

I don’t feel like it

Let’s stop this tradition now

Thank you for stopping
