How Writing For the Daily Cuppa Helps Me As a Poet
The power of fewer words
It’s tough to rein in words sometimes, whether in speaking or writing. When I write poems I sometimes struggle with getting to the essentials, without being distracted by too many words.
Since the requirements for the Daily Cuppa place a limit of 150 words, there’s quite a bit of pre-submission editing that has to happen. This is the same process I engage in when I sit down to revise a poem.
The first drafts of my poems are usually very wordy, as I let my thoughts spill willy-nilly on the page. The necessary revision which follows is like weeding a tangled garden, choosing only what you want most to cultivate and display.
Writing for the Daily Cuppa helps me to build my word gardening skills.
