Maybe Aging Well Isn’t About Having Things Figured Out

Maybe it’s about the opposite

I used to think aging and certainty went hand in hand.

That as I aged I’d have things figured out.

But I couldn’t be more wrong.

Once certainty about something plants itself in my head, the ground beneath my feet shifts from hard-packed soil to a soggy bog. Instead of striding along with assuredness, my feet now sink with each step.

Just when I think I’ve firmly understood a situation or topic, a new piece of information comes along to rattle my conclusions and the terrain underfoot changes.

I go from bog to snow to sand to prairie.

So maybe aging well isn’t about having things figured out.

Maybe it’s about staying open to what comes, enjoying the journey, and bringing along a wide variety of footwear.
