No One Cares About My Dead Squirrels

Rue lounging, leaning Elm in the background

Underneath the leaning Elm in my backyard, a squirrel has died.

Last December, one year ago, the same thing happened.

A seemingly healthy squirrel (despite its winter bod) was found at the base of the Elm. Dead.

What gives?

Is the tree proving treacherous? I understand adult squirrels can recover from most falls.

Maybe this squirrel had no plans to carry on with our Minnesota winter?

I made a call to the DNR to see if they want the curious incidents reported. And asked how to properly put the creatures to rest.

“Double-bag” and dispose of the squirrel in the garbage is what they told me. Or bury the little guy.

But it’s winter so — frozen ground.

I think I’ll wait and see if another creature finds their free lunch.

Or maybe my old friend will fertilize the raspberry bushes at the edge of the yard.
