Picture Book — Julian Is a Mermaid by Jessica Love
A book filled with colorful mermaids and love between a boy and his Nana.
This is a beautiful book illustrating a journey of a boy searching for his self-identity — a story about inclusiveness and self-acceptance.
The author uses the metaphor mermaids where Julian, the main character, imagines himself as one and plays make-believe when he is at home. The story brings two generations — Nana, Julian’s grandmother, and Julian as a young boy who dreams to be a mermaid one day. He quietly explores on his own until Nana caught him. You can hear Nana’s warm, gentle voice filled with love when she acknowledges Julian as who he wants to be.
