The camellia flower is part of the family Theaceae, which includes the tea plant — the one we drink — Camellia sinensis. These evergreen shrubs or trees are native to East Asia and thrive in acidic soils and temperate climates.

In folklore, camellias hold intriguing symbolism. In Japan, falling camellia blossoms are said to represent sudden death, as the entire flower drops at once rather than shedding petals gradually.

I hope this doesn’t follow through because when it rains here (UK) the shrub (above) drops the lot all in one go!!! It would be a massacre!

Some tales even describe camellias as inhabited by spirits or yōkai, blending their beauty with mystery. Their association with life, mortality, and devotion makes them a popular motif in both art and storytelling across cultures.
