First there were the wild turkeys. Then white and tan colored puddle ducks. And let’s not forget the free-range chickens.

All of these cheeky, self-satisfied birds have been increasingly throwing their weight around in my quiet rural neighborhood lately. It seems I can never drive along the narrow country roads without having to slow to a crawl and come to a full stop to let my feathered neighbors cross the road.

Of course, it is a delight to see them nearly every day, waddling with splayed feet or strolling and dawdling in an unhurried way, showing they are completely unimpressed with any oncoming cars.

Why did the chicken cross the road? Your guess is as good as mine. Maybe the turkeys and the ducks recommended the exercise!
