The Importance of Rituals
I woke up today with a thought about the importance of rituals. Not religious ones, but social ones.
Back when I ran cross country our coach said that when you had nothing left, form would finish the race. And I think rituals are the equivalent of form. When you have no energy, mental or physical, left, rituals can hold it together. Rituals like getting drunk and going to a strip club after being dumped. Or going to the park on your day off to see the geese even if you wake up screaming from a nightmare of existential dread.
Do you have any rituals that keep your life on track even when everything else is going off the rails? Or do you know someone with complicated social rituals? Please share in the comments.
