The Joy of Writing Dialogue
It’s easy! Right?
Good dialogues are challenging to write, right? Let me help you with a few examples. First, a dialogue between two friends that is strictly an exchange of insults. Friends do that all the time.
“What in the world were you thinking?”
“So you admit that I was thinking.”
“Yeah, when you start thinking, you’re only looking to get a participation trophy.”
“At least, I got one. You’re suffering from delusions of adequacy.”
“When you start thinking, people start looking for the rubber that’s burning.”
Okay, that’s great.
But how do you write a dialogue when it consists of one person speaking and the other simply responding with a nonverbal gesture, such as a nod or a shrug of the shoulders? Can you do that?
Yes.
