There’s a Feeling in the Air
A Short Form Piece
There’s a feeling in the air. An anticipation of what’s to come, and I’m not sure I like it.
It tingles like an electric shock and sets my skin buzzing. It’s the ominous hovering of rainclouds that have yet to burst; the tension in the dental chair before the tooth comes out.
I chalk it up to the simple realization that we live upon shifting sand. That the ground moves beneath us — swaying and changing — in a way that is both exhilarating and terrifying.
The floor is lava, we used to say when we were young, clinging to the couch armrest or standing on a dining room chair. Don’t fall in.
I sometimes feel that as an adult; when the floor begins to warp and bend beneath our feet.
