Buttercups, dandelions, daisies. Lawn weeds. Or are they?

In the UK these three wildflowers have been cut, poisoned, dug up or burnt alive, for as long as I can remember. The flowers have always managed to get the upper hand and continue to ignore all of mankind's attempts to destroy them. Then, along came “No Mow May.”

The idea is to allow them to flourish and give insects a chance to take advantage of the bounty they offer. Our dwindling insect population need all the help they can get. The policy has received a mixed reception from local councils and gardeners alike.

However, the shows are truly magnificent when the flowers are left to smile at the sun. Banks of yellow and white, interspersed with splashes of red campion and bluebells, have given lanes, housing estates and gardens a whole new perspective.
