We’re not pretty, but we’re sweet

My friends and I are quietly sitting on the shelves of the supermarket, but everyone was a little anxious. Some customers stop by our aisle: only a few put us in their carts.

It seems that our appearance scares people.

Our name is prickly pear, and we belong to the cactus family. We have a colorful body covered with thorns. However, our flesh is sweet, juicy, and aromatic.

Plus, we have medicinal effects. In a recent study, cactus was found to help prevent or slow the development of diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers.

Hey, isn’t this Mulan? But she didn’t buy either. The last time she peeled without gloves, her hands were stung by the thorns.

Please don’t judge a book by its cover! We are indeed nutritious and very healthy fruit!
