What is It About Cats and Cardboard Boxes?

One of life’s mini-mysteries

Anyone who has ever lived with a cat will recognize this scenario:

You buy what you think will be a wonderful toy or a cozy sleeping mat for your cat. You pull the item out of its box, turn away for just a moment —

and the cat is claiming the empty box, purring and climbing all over it as if it were just what she always wanted!

From the cat’s point of view the box is something to scratch, to rub against, to hide in, to sleep on. What more would she want? Until the next cardboard box arrives. . .

Still, I never quite give up ordering special gifts for my cats. Hoping at some point to find something they will love, even more than the box the gifts came in!
