What’s Making That Racket?

Oh, a bunch of birds!

I was enjoying my morning “cuppa” of tea when I became aware of a cacophony of bird calls in my backyard. Grabbing my binoculars, I hurried to the porch to see what was happening.

At first I thought there was a war between the resident bluejays and catbirds. But as I scanned the woodland trees bordering my property, I saw what the ruckus was about.

A hawk huddled on a naked tree branch. The smaller birds were screaming at him, dive-bombing repeatedly.

A risky business for small birds against a large foe, which I’ve discussed in earlier writing. But brave too. After about ten minutes, the hawk flew away.

The birds calmed down, but they kept calling to each other. I thought I detected a distinct note of braggadocio in their voices!
