“But there’s a hidden productivity killer we should perhaps pay more attention to: presenteeism.”(Anne-Laure Le Cunff)

Absenteeism is a no-show at work; presenteeism is an obsessive showing up to work.

The main causes of presenteeism are:

  • Employees and entrepreneurs fear the loss of jobs and businesses.
  • An excessive attachment to work that borders on workaholism.
  • Tying identity and self-worth to work.
  • Mission-driven work, like teaching and caregiving, involves overwork.

Some are able to work with high energy and perform optimally. Others slog long hours, underperform, and ruin their health. Many others overperform but suffer from ill health.

Setting clear boundaries, taking restful pauses, and prioritising health will help us avoid the peril of presenteeism.

Presenteeism is not an obvious danger. To safeguard our health, well-being, and relationships, seek feedback, support, and help from trusted people.
