Non-Binary Recognition is Awesome!

A few years ago, hardly anyone knew what the terms “non-binary” or “genderqueer” were. Now non-binary gender identities are being recognized more and more in the media, politics, and elsewhere.

For starters, the CW recently announced that queer YouTuber Ben J. Pierce will star in the television network’s upcoming show “Glamorous,” which will be the first TV show to have a non-binary main character. The show, according to NewNowNext, “centers on a gender non-conforming recent high school graduate who starts interning at a cosmetics company whose products they previously panned on YouTube.”

While “Glamorous” will be the first show to have a non-binary protagonist, it won’t be the first to have non-binary characters. Pop Dust lists five particular shows with non-binary characters/actors: “Billions,” “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” “Degrassi: Next Class,” “Vida,” and “Good Girls.”

In politics, a new bill is currently being debated in Maryland that would, if passed, give Maryland IDs a non-binary gender option. Of course, despite Maryland being a blue state, some Maryland lawmakers are a bit confused. Republican Sen. J.B. Jennings said during a hearing a few weeks ago, “When it comes to that information, I think it should be accurate.
