President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday denounced reports by the New York Times and other newspapers that he had sought security clearance for his adult children and son-in-law Jared Kushner to work in the White House with him a “vicious, unsubstantiated rumor by failing publications” that was designed to prevent him from obtaining the security clearances for his adult children and son-in-law that would be needed when they came to work for him in the White House.

“Very bad reporting by failing @nytimes and others regarding my kids and security clearance. Don’t want it, haven’t asked!” the president-elect tweeted early Thursday morning.

The tweet storm continued: “Typical left-wing smear. My kids have jobs and lives of their own. Failing @nytimes knows when we #DrainTheSwamp in DC they are next!”

“So embarrassing! They’ll look even dumber when Jared sails through the background check and is working by my side in January. #MAGA” he then tweeted.

A spokesperson for Trump’s presidential transition team reiterated to reporters that there is no truth to the rumors that Jared Kushner is seeking either security clearance or a position in Trump’s White House. The spokesperson then listed off several specific roles that Kushner is considering in the administration, stating that the president anticipated “zero problems” with getting him the necessary security clearance for any of them.

When asked for clarification about which was true, the spokesperson said, “You’re new here, aren’t you?” and gave a single, pitying laugh.
